Research of World Health Organization (WHO) suggested that by 2010, cancers had become the worst deadly diseases over cardiovascular diseases. Based on the statistical results of WHO, in 2007, the number of diagnosed cancer patients was twelve million; and the death number of cancered patients was more than 7 million in past every year. According to this tempo, it can be estimated that by 2030, the number of diagnosed cancer patients will be up to 27 million every year, and the death number will be up to 17 million. However, by now, human beings have not found an effective method to cure it. Before the diffusion of cancer cell, finding and curing cancer is the accepted method for decreasing cancer death. Therefore, in order to decrease the cancer danger for human health, various medicine contrast agents need to be applied in the process of medical diagnoses and therapy. At present, in clinic, the used contrast agents can hardly provide therapeutic function, which restricts the application of contrast agents in clinical diagnoses and therapy. Therefore, we want to develop a multi-functional medicine contrast agents, in which we need to solve a series of critical technologies and problems, including the synthesis and characterization of multi-functional nanomaterials/nanoconjugates, toxicological test, and clinical test in animal and human body. Moreover, based on multifunctional medicine contrast agents and nanotechnology, we will realize the early diagnoses and therapy of fatal diseases, especially cancers.

With the social development and the increase of energy need, environmental pollution, especially water pollution has become a non-ignore problem. In order to decrease water pollution and the treatment cost, we need to detect and treat water pollution in early time, and to detect toxic cations timely. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a toxic cation detection method with speediness, high-sensitiveness, good selectivity, low cost. We want to develop a simple method without expensive equipment, which is based on the colour change of nanoparticles-ligand molecules system, to fast detect the toxic cations in aqueous solutions.

Many biomacromolecules, for example DNA, membrane proteins and so on, have perfect periodic structures. Using the periodic structures, we can assemble nanoparticles with specially physical and chemical properties to form periodic nanostructures with special functions. On the one hand, it is possible to investigate the relationship and properties of periodic nanostructures; on the other hand, it also provides a platform for investigating nanoparticles with periodic structures and exploring the new properties and phenomena brought by periodic nanostructures.
