Located at the north sector of Ningbo Higher Education Park, the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology (CNITECH), the Chinese Academy Sciences (CAS), is the first national research institute founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences in Zhejiang province. The foundation of the CNITECH was initiated by Chinese Academy of Sciences, the People's Governments of Zhejiang Province and Ningbo City in April, 2004, and approved by the State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform on March 10, 2006. Upon the validation of the three initiating parties on November 30, 2007, the CNITECH was formally established in Ningbo.
As the outreach of CAS to local economic and social development, CNITECH established 6 divisions including:polymer and composites ,magnetic materials , functional materials and nano devices, surface engineering , fuel cell technology and special fabric materials. A total amount of ￥120 million was invested for various equipments and facilities to establish a public research and testing center and 5 professional platforms in the CNITECH.
The CNITECH is now one of premier research institutes in China. A series of research platforms have been opened with efforts, including: Carbon-fiber manufacturing national engineering laboratory, province-ministry co-constructed state key laboratory “Ningbo key laboratory cultivation base of advanced materials manufacturing and applications”, National development and reform commission (NDRC) science and technology innovation base of magnetic materials, CAS key laboratory of magnetic materials and devices (in progress), Zhejiang provincial key laboratory of magnetic materials and applications, Ningbo key laboratory of polymeric materials, Ningbo key laboratory of inorganic ultra- and nano-materials and applications, and etc. A variety of foundations and projects have been obtained by the CNITECH, including: National Key Technology Support Program, National Natural Science Foundation, 863 program, 973 program, etc. A total of ~300 projects sums up to a research expenditure of ￥3 billion. In addition, approximately 300 papers have been published in various journals and proceedings, including 135 SCI and EI papers,178 chinese patents and 4 international patents have been applied. In summary, the CNITECH has attained a number of influential innovative scientific and technological achievements and has become a well-established scientific and technological innovation source.
The CNITECH has established a vibrant and dynamic research team led by more than 50 oversea advanced talents through “Fleet Plan”, “Team Plan” and “Bud Plan” three recruiting programs. The institute has personnel of 396, including 81 with senior technical titles and 41 with associate senior technical titles. The staffs with PhD degrees occupy 38% of the personnel and 32% of the employees holds master degrees. This is a young team with an average age of 32. In the mean time, 28 innovation teams have established in the institute, including 8 teams in key fields and major scientific projects.
The CNITECH has 9 graduate programs, including 3 PhD programs, 3 professional master programs and 3 master of engineering programs. A total of 314 students have been enrolled in the graduate programs at CNITECH including 84 PhD students. 212 students are studying in their program including 65 PhD students. The CNITECH also opens a center for post-doctoral research. which has enrolled 57 postdoctoral researchers with 43 are still in their programs.
The CNITECH has organized a variety of academic communication activities and set up a network with more than 30 domestic and international institutions and universities for extensive academic collaboration. In 2009, the CNITECH was awarded “International collaboration base” by the Science and Technology Ministry. There are also successful collaborations between the CNITECH and corporations in a variety of forms, including 26 co-constructed engineering technology centers, 46 special commissioners in science and technology from the CNITECH to local government offices and corporations, 4 successful technology transfer from the CNITECH to corporations, and etc. In 2009, the office of institute-local collaboration and technology transfer of the CNITECH was awarded National demo-institute of technology transfer.
Recently, CNITECH, Zhejiang and Ningbo three parties determined to intensify their overall strategic collaborations based on the fulfillment of one-stage co-construction of the CNITECH so that the CNITECH can impose its supporting and leading roles better as a public research institution and thrive in the national and local innovations, enterprises and economic upgradation. In March, 2009, a memorandum on CNITECH 2nd stage construction was signed by the three parties to co-establish Ningbo Industrial Technology Research Institute (NITRI), Chinese Academy of Sciences. As described in the blueprints, the new NITRI will consist of three non-corporate institutes: material technology and engineering, new energy technology and advanced manufacturing technology.
"Develop applicable materials, manufacture advanced devices" is our guiding ideology and “One focus, four persistence” is our mission. The CNITECH is abiding to, and will continue with, these two principles. Specifically, the CNITECH works for the establishment in Zhejiang with research and service spanning all over China and even the world. We are confident the CNITECH will become a premier comprehensive research institution in the Yangtze River Delta Region with features covering technology innovation, the transformation of scientific and technological achievements into actual productive forces, scientific and technological services and education in no time. An amount of ￥760 million has been invested in the CNITECH 2nd stage construction. It is estimated a campus of 8000 m2 in area will be accomplished by 2013.
The CNITECH is now moving on a new phase. All employees are working with enthusiasm and confidence based on the Scientific Outlook on Development in order to promote the development of our country in the fields of material sciences and technology and contribute to the improvement of regional economy, society and civilization.
