On May 22nd, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), held the 2021 Public Science Day, attracting nearly 700 teachers and students from more than ten primary and middle schools in Ningbo.
In combination with a movie clip from "Alita: Battle Angel" and an interactive game, which drew great attention of the audience, research fellow ZHANG Ruoyu explained the self-repair principle of materials and introduced the "artificial muscle" material that endows robots with the advanced self-repair function, thus broadening the students' horizons.
Research fellow LI He delivered a popular science lecture themed as "Diamond: Past and Present". He illuminated the formation process of natural diamonds and the synthesis & application of artificial diamonds, showcased the research achievements of artificial diamonds conducted by NIMTE.
Eight diverse well-prepared experiments scattered in NIMTE for students to participate in, including "The Beauty of Chemistry", "Magical Heat and Entropy", "The Secret of Wireless Charging", "Fantastic Membrane Materials", and "The mysterious VR world", etc. All theses immersive experiments are close to life, demonstrated with simple, vivid and interesting form.
In addition to science fairs, this event was marked by a popular science seminar that highlighted "Face-to-face Conversation with Scientists", which assembled over 60 students from 7 middle schools in Ningbo and NIMTE researchers to share research experiences and insights & development trends of science with each other.
As a response to the national call to holding scientific activities for the public, NIMTE has held the Public Science Day for 11 years, attracting more than 4700 visitors. With the great support of numerous scientific researchers and volunteers, this event allows the public to experience the ever-changing advanced scientific & technological innovations, thus carrying forward scientific spirits.
