On July 11, 2016, Dr. Shaoping Bai was invited by the director of Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology —Professor Guilin Yang to give an academic report in CNITECH,CAS. Dr.Bai gave us a speech named Design and control of assistive exoskeletons for the motion assistance of the elderly.
As the global ageing predictions become reality, assistive exoskeletons are being increasingly considered as future aids to help elderly persons staying active in their daily living tasks. By deploying such assistive aids, elderly persons are expected to be able to live independently with improved quality of life. In this talk, Dr. Shaoping Bai described the design and control of an assistive exoskeleton, namely, the AXO-SUIT. It is a project funded by the European Commission under the Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme Initiative Call 6. The project aims to develop the core technologies and prototype products of wearable exoskeletons to provide comprehensive physical assistance in mobility, object handling and grasping for the elderly. In the talk, problems of novel mechanism design, biomechanics modeling for physical human-robot interaction, system development and end-user involvement, human intention detection sensing and motion control, etc., are discussed with some solutions presented. Lots of researchers showed great interest in AXO-SUIT.
Dr. Shaoping Bai received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering from The Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2001, MEng degree from Tsinghuan University and B.S. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1993 and 1988, respectively. He is an Associate Professor at the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Aalborg University (AAU), Denmark. He is one of the founders of Centre for Robotics Research (CRR), AAU. He was the coordinator of the CRR for the year 2010-2012. Dr. Bai is an AE of ASME J. of Mechanisms and Robotics.
