2014 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) 2014 Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC 2014) was held from 9-13, 2014, in Detroit, Michigan. This is the international top-level conference in manufacturing industry with more than 550 participants.

Dr. Wenwu Zhang, from the Advanced Manufacturing Division in the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology (CNITECH), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the chairman of the Micro/Nano manufacturing committee, and has participated in organizing work of ASME for a long time. Dr. Zhang initiated and organized the international forum “Laser，Process Innovations and Energy Field Manufacturing”. This forum has now become a well-known international academic forum.

At this conference, Dr. Zhang hosted two chapters as the session chairman, and gave reports of four papers, “Experimental Study on Laser High-speed Micro-processing”, “Diamond，Lean Innovation and Intelligent Energy Field Manufacturing”, “Review on the Development of Non-destructive Testing Based on Laser Ultrasonic Technique”, “A Numerical Study on Welding Stainless Steel with Lasers”, which were well received by the experts and scholars.

This academic communication effectively improved the international academic influence of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute, CNITECH, and laid a good foundation for technology commercialization in the future. During the conference, Dr. Zhang also actively communicated with foreign scholars, hoping to introduce more outstanding talents for CNITECH. (Yang Yang reports)
