The 10th European SOFC Forum was held in Lucerne,Switzerland from June 26 to 29.A 7-number delegation from NIMTE attended the event. Wang Wei Guo,deputy director of NIMTE,director of Division of Fuel Cell&Energy Technology(FCET),was invited to make plenary talk entitled‘Current SOFC Development in China:Challenges and Solutions for SOFC Technologies’after opening ceremony. Lots of participants were attracted for the good quality and fine price. This exhibition provided further opportunities for collaborative efforts between the NIMTE and their international counterparts. This event is also an opportunity for cooperation between SOFC international counterparts.

Bradley delivered a lecture titled Polymer microarrays-Fabrication and biological application for cellular control and manipulation. Bradley introduced a variety of approaches for at the preparation and high-content screening of polymer microarray platform and their application in a number of cell based screens. The report was focused on three themes including:(1)The development and exploitation of polymer microarray technology for the identification and application of polymers for controlling and modulating cells。 He showed great interest in developing joint work with NIMTE in coming future.

The Xiangshan Science Conferences(XSSC)held the 423rd symposium under the theme of"The Materials Corrosion Theories Research and Key Experimental Technologies at Deep Sea Hydrothermal Extreme Environment”in Beijing from May 15 to 17.This event focused on“Materials Corrosion in Deep-sea Extreme Environments”with the purpose to increase a deep-sea awareness,promote the understanding of deep-sea materials corrosion studies in China,and recognize the urgency of the studies. (2)the promotional importance of corrosion studies in deep-sea environment on deep-sea equipment and materials development。

The International Symposium on Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Technology was held in Ningbo on November 9-12,2011.The symposium was co-chaired by Dr. Weiguo Wang from Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering,Chinese Academy of Sciences. They gave plenary talks“High Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells:Development and Commercialization Status in the United States”。 “SOFC Technology Progress in Japan and Contribution of AIST”。 “Development of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells at Topsoe Fuel Cell:from Science to Technology”。 Jian Li from Huazhong University of Science&Technology,Prof. Zhe Lv from Harbin Institute of Technology.

More than 200 experts,scholars,technicians and younger researchers both in abroad and China who are engaged in surface engineering have attended the conference. Xue Qunji，Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering attended the conference and made the keynote lecture entitled Fabrication and tribological performance of micro/nano-textured lubricant films. Chen Jianmin,Director of the Surface Engineering Division in NIMTE made the invited report entitled Superlubricative diamond-like carbon nanocomposite films for space application. C-ICSE is a very important academic activity for the researchers in the field of material and mechanical engineering.

The ANTEC Conference organized by SPE was held in Boston. More than 2000 people from companies,universities and institutes participated in this important event. )were invited as plenary speakers to present the topics of“Innovations in Engineering Thermoplastics–SABIC’s Approach to New Materials and New Applications”and“Industry Dynamics Impacting the Resin Supply Chain”。 Thirty-seven technical sessions took place continuously in three days. Wentao Zhai introduced the development principle,brain gain policy,current research achievements of NIMTE,and welcome young scientists to join us.

Oliver from the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden(IFW),Germany visited NIMTE and gave an impressive presentation on Magnetic Materials in Sustainable Energy on 5th May 2011.The presentation,as one of The Magnetic Materials and its Applications Lecture Series of NIMTE,was hosted by Prof. Yan Aru from Division of Magnetic Materials. Oliver firstly gave an overview of IFW,and gave a detailed explanation on sintered NdFeB magnets,the relationship between hot deformation microstructure and magnetic properties of magnets,the advantages and disadvantages of different types of magnetic refrigeration materials. Oliver visited the laboratory of the Division of Magnetic Materials accompanied by Prof.

Liu Ping and his research group from the Division of Magnetic Materials,NIMTE attended the INTERMAG 2011 Conference from 25th to 29th April,2011 in Taibei. Dr Janusz Jewulski,head of the Fuel Cell Department of the Institute of Power Engineering(IEN),Poland,and his colleague Ms. Janina Ilmurzyńska from the Thermal Processes Department of the IEN,visited the Fuel Cells and Energy Technology Division(FCET)on May 3rd,2011,.Professor Weiguo Wang,head of the FCET,hosted their visit Dr Janusz Jewulski and Janina Ilmurzyńska took a tour to the laboratories of the FCET. Dr Janusz Jewulski highly appraised the achievements of the FCET and gave his opinions about the single cells and stacks development. (Zhou Chen Reports)。

Singhal had worked at Siemens Power Generation(formerly Westinghouse Electric Corporation)for over 29 years where he was manager of Fuel Cell Technology there,and was responsible for the development of high temperature solid oxide fuel cells for stationary power generation. He joined the Energy and Environment Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory(PNNL)in 2000,and was one of chief leaders of the Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance(SECA).Dr. National Academy of Engineering and the Washington State Academy of Sciences。 Reported by Fuel Cell&Energy Technology Division。
