Abstract:
SiAlON ceramics are widely used as advanced structural materials in heat engines, bearings, cutting tools, and industrial tubes because of their high strength, hardness, toughness, thermal conductivity, andcorrosion/oxidation resistance. Their crystal structure has two large interstices that can stabilize rare-earthcations. Since 2000, rare-earth oxides (Y, Eu, Gd, Pr) have been incorporated into SiAlON to produce durable phosphor plates for laser-driven lighting, while transparent SiAlON doped with Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb have been studied for up-/down-conversion photoluminescence. This report will present transparent SiAlON up-conversion ceramics for high-sensitivity, high-temperature optical thermometry, and luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) based on transparent Tm-doped SiAlON plates for solar harvesting in next-generation smart windows.
Speaker Biography:
Prof. Soo Wohn Lee served as a Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering at Sun Moon University (Korea) and is currently a Distinguished Emeritus Professor in the Department of Energy and Chemical Engineering. His primary research focus centers on the microstructural design of SiAlON ceramics to achieve multifunctional properties-including superior thermal conductivity and high opticaltransparency-as well as the electrodeposition of Ni-nanoceramic composite coatings. Prof. Lee served as General Secretary of ISO/TC 107 starting in 2005, and has been serving as the Chairperson of ISO/TC 107 since 2024. He served as President of the IUMRS from 2017 to 2018, currently chairs the IUMRS Meeting Commission, and previously conference chair of major international conferences including IUMRS-ICAM2015 and IUMRS-ICAM 2022. Prof. Lee has published over 350 SCI papers and six ISO standardization publications.
