Academic Lecture: Materials Research Data for Next Paradigm of Materials Science
Nov 04, 2025

SPEAKER:  Prof. Kwang-Ryeol Lee

TIME:9:00-11:00, Nov. 4, 2025

VENUE705 Bianguan, NIMTE

Abstract:

Systematically structured materials research data is not only major R&D asset but basic requirement for materials design by data driven methods. It would be thus essential for efficiently retrieving the materials data from various sources to standardize the data keywords and specify the data type and unit of numeric data. Expert Committee for Standardization of Materials Research Data in Korea suggested the harmonized materials data structure that can consistently manage the materials research data ofvarious sub-disciplines, The concept of "materials system" was used for standard schema of materials research data, so that the intrinsic data of materials is separated from the data closely related to specific application. This strategy enables one to build the harmonized data structure for wide range of materials research, that would result in improved interoperability of the data. This presentation will introduce the standard schema and keywords being developed in Korea. It will be discussed about the compatibility with the data structures worldwide for promoting FAIR principles of materials research data.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Kwang-Ryeol Lee is a tenured fellow and principal research scientist at Computational Science Research Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). After finishing Ph.D. in 1988 from KAIST and postdoctoral experience in Harvard University, he joined KAIST in 1991 and established diamond-like carbon (DLC) research group. From 2001, his research was extended to the computational nano-science to understand atomistic or sub-atomistic phenomena of materials. He published about 320 papers with more than 13,800 citations and H index of 61 (Google Scholar), more than 50 patents. He received 4 times the Best Research Award of KIST, Commendation of the Prime Minister of Korea in 2006, Two times of NanoKorea Award. He served for many international conferences in both thin film technology and computational materials science. His effort for building Nano MaterialsDesign Platform was recognized by "2018 Top 10 Nanotechnologies" award. He is the chair of committee for materials R&D data standard in Korea since 2021.
